Artificial Intelligence and Mass Surveillance

Join us for a legislative briefing on artificial intelligence and mass surveillance. As AI sweeps across our world, policymakers need to be able to distinguish fact from fiction, hype from real life harm. California has a key role to play, and our state’s elected leaders must stay ahead of how AI is transforming, and at times, supercharging, surveillance in predictable and unfamiliar ways.

From ACLU California Action:

This legislative briefing will give legislators, their staff, and the public tools to analyze and understand how AI systems impact people’s lives, and how they intersect with mass surveillance. Civil rights and AI policy experts will lead the discussion and cover topics including:

  • AI and the state: how government agencies are already using artificial intelligence to track, investigate, and make decisions about the lives of California residents.
  • The role of corporate actors: from the leaders in the field, to the lucrative surveillance industry.
  • The impact on California’s Black and brown communities: the dangers AI poses to communities that are under-resourced and over-policed.
  • How California’s leaders can protect people: highlighting important policy steps that legislators can and must take.

Indeed, AI-fueled surveillance is already encroaching on our private lives. In fact, you may be in an AI-fueled facial recognition database. One such company, Clearview AI, has scraped personal images from the internet to build its mass face surveillance system. We encourage interested attendees to use this form to request the file that Clearview AI maintains about you.
